Bentonite vs organic cat litter: what to check

“Natural”, “organic” and “plant-based” are not interchangeable. A useful comparison starts with the material on the label, not a green-looking pack.

By Eco Furr · Product and material guidance

Bentonite is a mineral material

Bentonite cat litter is made from clay. Eco Furr’s 5 kg litter is a bentonite clumping product, not a plant-based litter. We do not describe it as certified organic, biodegradable, compostable or flushable because those claims have not been substantiated for this product.

Plant-based does not automatically mean certified organic

Plant-based litters can use materials such as wood, paper, corn or other plant fibres. Those ingredients alone do not establish organic certification or prove a particular disposal claim. Ask the manufacturer what “organic” means for its product and request evidence for certification or environmental claims.

Compare the properties that matter in your home

Look at clumping, dust, tracking, texture, scent, pack weight and the delivered price. Different products and materials behave differently; avoid assuming every clay litter or every plant-based litter performs the same way. Your cat’s acceptance is part of the decision.

Be thoughtful about fragrance

Some cats dislike strong scents. Cats Protection generally recommends unscented litter and regular cleaning rather than fragrance to manage smells. Eco Furr’s lavender granules are a separate scented add-on; check the label instructions and your cat’s preferences before using them. Fragrance does not replace scooping.

Check disposal instructions before buying

Do not assume a product can be flushed or that used litter is suitable for home compost. Follow the product instructions and local waste requirements. If your priority is a certified organic or plant-based product, verify the specific material and supporting evidence rather than treating bentonite as organic.
